Joining The Lincoln Group

subjectJoining The Lincoln Group

Hello President Russell,

I am writing to inquire about membership into The Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia. I was 7 when President Lincoln was assassinated. I will always remember that afternoon when my 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Butterworth, broke the disturbing news of that fateful day in Dallas to our classroom. We all cried. That was also the first time my father let us eat our dinner with the television on.

I think that President Lincoln is my favorite President of all time. I have read many books about him and even took two classes in college on him. Whenever my friends have questions on President Lincoln, they always come to me. My President Lincoln knowledge is outstanding. This is why I am extremely interested in becoming a member of The Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia. What do I need to do to become a member? I want in as soon as possible. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,
Sasha

Dear Sasha,

Thank you for your e-mail. I appreciate your interest in President Lincoln and am glad that you are able to share your knowledge about him with your friends. As you may know, President Lincoln was President during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865 and was assassinated in Washington, D.C. in 1865. Another great American, President Kennedy was assassinated nearly 100 years later in 1963 in Dallas, Texas.

Your e-mail mentioned that you were seven when President Lincoln was assassinated. Perhaps you meant to say President Kennedy. If you would like to learn more about President Kennedy, you could go to www.jfklibrary.org which would connect you with the President Kennedy Library. If you would still like to be part of the Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia please let me know and I will give you the details and cost for joining.

Very sincerely,

Edgar Russell III
President, Lincoln Group of DC

New Gardena Business

subjectNew Gardena Business

Hello Mr. Fertal,

I am writing about a business I would like to start in Gardena, California. The name of my business will be "Microwave Your Food Here". I would like to open many small kiosks around town. Right now, I am thinking about 200 of these. Basically, when people want to prepare their food, they will come into one of my kiosks and use the microwave for a small fee. This is the only service we offer. Many other cities have this business, but to my knowledge this does not exist in Gardena. Although I plan to start off small, I would eventually like to expand to over a thousand of these kiosks. I feel there is a big need for this. People need somewhere to prepare there food. Often, people wander the streets with their cold, unprepared food. Then they will see my kiosk signs (will be over 20 feet tall with a lot of bright lights and a loud siren) and see that they can microwave their food at "Microwave Your Food Here".

Please let me know what I need to do start my business. I do not want my rival, "MICROWAVE HERE NOW!", to beat me to this new market.

Thanks,
Sasha

Dear Sasha Kaun,

Thank you for your inquiry on starting a business in Gardena. I would recommend that you go to the City of Gardena website and click on the Business menu and then click on the icon “Starting a Business in Gardena.” I would also recommend you contact the Small Business Development Center at (310) 973-3177. They provide assistance to small businesses including start-ups.

Please keep in mind that you will need to locate your business in an area or areas that is zoned for this type of business. You will also have to have sufficient capital. Without sufficient capital, you will not be successful in reaching your goals. The City of Gardena does not offer any microloans or other financing programs for start-up businesses.

I hope these resources will assist you in your goals and I wish you every success.

Great Idea For America

subjectGreat Idea For America

Senator Zaun,

I have a great idea for America. I think it can make the best country in the world even better. A really super-country. I recently had my house toilet papered by local high school students. This did not please me. It also didn't please me when it rained and I had to clean it up the next day. I wasn't able to watch the NASCAR race because I had to clean up this mess. Needless to say, am very upset. But I have found a solution.

My suggestion: Build a colony for children (I am thinking North and South Dakota). At the age children would normally attend kindergarten, they will be sent to this colony. It is REQUIRED that they go. The LAW! It is here that all American children will attend schooling. These children will learn discipline. They will remain in this colony until the age of 18 when they will be required to join the US Military for 3 years. Following duty, they will be able to attend college or start their occupation.

I think this is great for everyone. The citizens of North and South Dakota will be able to relocate somewhere that isn't boring. American children will have access to the best education and will learn much needed discipline. And I won't get toilet papered anymore.

Please let me know what you think of this idea and how long it would take to implement.

Thanks,
Sasha

I’m sorry Sasha. I have just been reading so many emails tonight on so many issues and when I came to yours, it made me smile. I don’t know if we could legally move kindergarteners, but maybe 16 or seventeen year olds. (just kidding)

I hope the next few rains will take care of your problem. I know when we got TP’d it was a pain to clean up for sure. My poor wife had a few garbage bags full, and was none too pleased.( It’s really hard to get out of the tall trees.)

Anyway, I hope this explains better what I meant.

Manteca Business Opportunity

subjectManteca Business Opportunity

Hello,

I am writing about a business I would like to bring to Manteca, California. I want to sell easels. I want to call it "A Manteca Easel Really Important Company of America" (AMERICA for short). I really enjoy art and believe that this niche company will really strive in Manteca. I plan to sell at sorts of easels (red, white, blue, tall, short, fat, green, rubber, metal, wood, white, etc.). My store would sell solely easels and would have a very patriotic (Should I capitalize that? I can never remember.) theme. I love America and believe most people do. I think once people start to like art, my store will take off and will become a worldwide phenomenon. I may sell trinkets, I have not yet decided. I will give out free ones on my first day. You can have one.

Please let me know what I need to in order to start my easel business. I want to start as soon as possible as art season is heating up.

Thanks,
Sasha

Hi Sasha, my name is Alma Martinez and I'm a planning technician for the Community Development, Planning Division for the City of Manteca. I've been assigned to respond back to your email. I wanted to first ask you if you've found a place here in Manteca that you would like to lease or purchase for your business? If so, I will need the physical address so I can look at the zoning of the property to determine whether retail sales is an allowed use in that district. Next, I will need to see what businesses have been occupied in that location and check whether retail sales was one of them.

I will need this information first and then we can discuss other questions you may have. I'm looking forward to working with you. I can be reached at (209) 825-2582 if you need to contact me by phone or email.

Thank you kindly,

Mr. Martinez,

Thank you for the quick response. However, following breakfast this morning, I realized it is not easels I really want to sell. I want to sell pancakes! Therefore, I would like to open up a pancake restaurant. I want to call it Jack's Jacks. I have even thought of the motto: "Jack's Jacks. Our pancakes are good good." I plan to decorate with all things Jack. I even plan to mix Jack Daniels into the maple syrup. This will give people a good pick-me-up before work, church, soccer practice, etc. Of course, we will need to ID patrons and make sure no one is drinking the maple syrup straight from the bottle. These bottles will be clearly distinguished from the other bottles.

Please let me know what codes I will need to adhere to now that I am opening a restaurant. I would like to get started as soon as possible to take advantage of pancake season. I have secured the necessary funding and will be looking to rent at a downtown location.

Thank you very much!
Sasha

Good morning Sasha,

We need restaurants downtown! When you find a location let's make sure it is zoned Commercial. I think your idea is great. We have a few restaurants in Manteca that serve breakfast but don't have enough downtown or the West side of Yosemite Avenue, except for a donut shop and fast-food.

Also, when you find a location and if it doesn't have a kitchen, then you will need to install one and it will take a building permit from the City Building Department and pay a sewer project allocation fee of $500 to the Planning Department. This will allow you to be granted the additional gallons per sewer you need for the restaurant. You will also need to submit plans, so it is important to find a designer or architect and a contractor to help you with the remodel. Check if any of your relatives or friends can recommend you to someone.

Serving of alcohol will require a liquor license (Jack Daniels Syrup) from the Alcohol and Beverage Control Department and a Health Permit will be required from the San Joaquin Environmental Health Department for the serving of food. These two departments are not in the City of Manteca but here is their phone number so you can call them for requirements on the restaurant.

I can help further once you find an exact location, but before you commit to a lease give me a call first. I hope this information is helpful.

Talk to you soon.

Take care,

Alma,

I realized today that I want to sell both pancakes and easels. My new business will be called "A Manteca Easel Really Important Company of America Nation Jacks" (AMERICAN Jacks for short). My motto will now be "If you like AMERICA and pancakes, come here. Also come here if you like art easels." I think it is catchy. My neighbor told me she really likes it as well. My plan is to have many easels set up throughout my business with pancakes on each of them. The pancakes will be decorated as faces of American Jacks. For example, Jack Nicklaus, Jack Nicholson, John F "Jack" Kennedy, Jack the Ripper, Jack Bauer, Jack Black, and Jack and Diane. People will come in and observe the pancakes on the easels then decide on who looks most delicious. They will point it out and I will bring them their pancake. I will have a package discount if they purchase the easel as well. They can also buy just the easel. I am selling BOTH easels and pancakes. I am still planning on having Jack Daniels in the maple syrup. I think people will really like this. I do not think I will have trinkets anymore, unless people think I should. Do you think I should also sell trinkets?

Please let me know what you think of my business idea. I have created my final business plan today. I am anticipating great things! I would like to be open by June so I will need your assistance in getting started.

Thanks in advance,
Sasha

Hi Sasha,

I love your idea! It's creative and I think it will catch people's attention. We need something like this downtown.

Again, I do need a physical address for your proposed location so that I can look at the zoning of the property. Once I see that it's zoned Community Commercial or General Commercial, then we can start the application process for the paperwork.

The following will be required if the property for your proposed business has the right zoning for a restaurant and retail use:

Submit a building permit and construction plans to the Building Department for installation of the kitchen and remodel. Installation of the sign for the business will also require a separate building permit. Please contact the Building Department at (209) 239-8421 for more information.

Pay a $500 sewer project allocation fee for the restaurant use to the planning department (that's me).

Submit an application with the Department of Alcohol and Beverage Control for serving of alcohol for the maple syrup. Contact the ABC Dept. at (209) 948-7739. They are located in Stockton, CA.

Submit a business license with the Finance Department. Contact Mary Bingham at the Finance Department at (2090 825-2328.

Contact the San Joaquin County Health Department for inspections and permits to serve food. They may be reached at (209) 468-3420.

Please keep in mind each department will have a separate fee and you will need to contact them directly to inquire about their submittal requirements for your proposed business.

Have a great day!

Thanks,
